Fast-atom beam in the ALCATOR-A with a low safety factor q/sub L/

  • 1. A. F. Ioffe Physicotechnical Institute, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad

Description

The flux density of fast atoms emitted by the plasma in the ALCATOR-A has been measured in discharges with low values of q/sub L/. The flux density at q/sub L/ = 2.4 is more than two orders of magnitude higher than that at q/sub L/ = 5.3. The slope of the spectrum as observed along a diameter of the plasma column is essentially the same in the two cases. The up-down asymmetry of the flux of charge-exchange atoms over the cross section of the plasma column becomes much more pronounced with decreasing q/sub L/. The results imply an increase in the width of the ion temperature profile in a low-q/sub L/ discharge
