Design and implementation of an MCA card with double ADC for nuclear radiation analysis
Description
The rapid development of technology has triggered several interesting trends in nuclear instrumentation. In particular, the introduction of add-on cards that can serve as multichannel analyzer and offer adequate performance for most of the nuclear applications. The purpose of this thesis has been the design of a multichannel analyser inserted into microcomputer. The originality of this prototype MCA card with its innovative concept is the use of two analog digital converters or ADC of which the objective is to reduce to minima the lost of pulses during the acquisition and the signals processing. The first ADC works as the main converter (or master) and the second ADC the slave converter. The first ADC begins the first signals acquisition, while it will be busy for the processing, the second ADC continues the acquisition, thus there will be no lost pulses or precisely lost of pulses will be reduced to minima.The three main points for a multichannel analyzer will be studied such a the pile-up, the differential non-linearity or 'DNL' and the dead time. In the first part of this thesis the function of the MCA has been described and the different roles of the composed modules have been developed. In the second part, spectra analysis has been done with the MCA prototype as well the comparison with other MCAs such as MCAs S100, TISA, MCA35+, and the Inspector.

Le developpement rapide de la technologie a declenche plusieurs tendances interessantes en instrumentation nucleaire. En particulier, l'introduction des cartes inserables dans l'ordinateur qui peuvent servir comme des analyseurs multicanaux offre une performance adequate pour la plupart des applications nucleaires. L'objet de cette these a ete la conception d'un analyseur multicanaux insere dans un micro-ordinateur. Ce qui fait l'originalite de cette carte MCA prototype avec son concept d'innovation est l'utilisation de deux convertisseurs analogiques numeriques ou ADC dont le but est de reduire au minimum la perte en impulsions pendant l'acquisition et le traitement des signaux. Le premier ADC joue le role de convertisseur principal (ou maitre) et le second ADC celui d'un convertisseur secondaire (ou esclave). Le premier ADC debute la premiere acquisition des signaux, au moment ou il sera occupe pour le traitement, c'est le deuxieme ADC qui va continuer l'acquisition ainsi il n'y aura pas d'impulsions perdues ou plus precisement la perte d'impulsions sera reduite au minimum. Les trois points essentiels pour un analyseur multicanaux seront etudies tels que l'empilement, la non-linearite differentielle ou 'DNL' et le temps mort. Dans la premiere partie de cette these, on a decrit le fonctionnement du MCA et les differents roles des modules qui le constituent ont ete developpes. Dans la deuxieme partie, on a fait l'analyse des spectres avec le MCA prototype ainsi que la comparaison avec d'autres MCAs tels que les S100, TISA, MCA35+ et l'Inspector.Additional details
