Study of the influence of the molecular structure of vinyl compounds on their ability to form polymer films by electro-polymerization under cathodic polarisation

This research thesis addresses the study of new vinyl compounds, and aims at improving knowledge on the interaction between metal and a vinyl molecule under an intense electric field (the field of the double electrochemical layer), and more particularly at studying the influence of the molecular structure of the vinyl compound as well as the occurring reactions. After a first part presenting physical-chemical principles and knowledge which govern the whole set of reactions which are occurring within an electrolysis reactor, and a brief historical overview, this research thesis proposes a presentation of molecules which have been chosen for this study (vinyl compounds) and a justification of this choice. The author also presents the experimental device and describes the process implementation. Then, he presents and analyses experimental results. It appears that only some studied molecules result in the formation of polymer film
Abstract (French)
La synthese d'un film mince de polymere greffe a la surface de metaux usuels est realise par electro-polymerisation d'un monomere vinylique sous polarisation cathodique. Afin de comprendre les differents mecanismes mis en jeu, notamment a l'interface metal-polymere et d'obtenir une surface metallique modifiee aux proprietes predeterminees, plusieurs molecules sont etudiees. Les possibilites experimentales confrontees aux previsions theoriques permettent de selectionner deux types de molecules, le groupement fonctionnel etant soit un nitrile conjugue ou non avec la double liaison, soit un noyau aromatique. Le travail presente dans ce rapport constitue le volet experimental d'une etude plus generale souhaitant aboutir a une ingenierie moleculaire mettant en relation la nature et la structure moleculaire du polymere avec les proprietes du bi-compose ainsi obtenu. La premiere etape de la synthese est une analyse electrochimique des solutions contenant la molecule vinylique choisie. L'electrochimie est a la fois la methode de synthese des films et d'analyse 'in situ' des phenomenes rencontres. Les electrodes sont ensuite analysees par differentes techniques spectroscopiques: UPS, XPS, IR et ellipsometrie. Les surfaces modifiees sont ainsi caracterisees tant d'un point de vue electronique que chimique. Une analyse des solutions electrolytiques complete l'etude des surfaces. L'identification des intermediaires reactionnels formes en solution explique pourquoi certaines molecules ne sont pas capables de former un film de polymere en surface des cathodes. L'ensemble des resultats valide et precise le modele moleculaire de greffage et croissance du polymere sur la surface de l'electrode. L'utilisation d'un polymere soluble dans le solvant de synthese a permis d'etudier l'interface metal-polymere. Il apparait ainsi que la polarisation de l'electrode entraine un ensemble de conditions favorables a la creation d'un lien de chimisorption entre les niveaux 3d du metal et les niveaux vides de la molecule organique.
