X-ray absorption spectroscopy investigation of Fe in metal-chitosan complexes

Description
The scientific interest in metallo-organic chelating compounds is motivated by possibility of biomedical, ecological and industrial applications. The present studies are concentrated on iron-chitosan complexes. Chitosan is N-deacetylated product of chitin. Chitin is obtained in large quantities from crustacean shells (waste products of seafood processing industries). Both materials are significant natural polymers. Nowadays, the iron containing biopolymers are examined as possible useful drug carriers and controlled release beads for various model of drugs. In spite of intensive studies of the process of metal bonding in chitosan there is still no clear how metals are bound and what their coordination in chitosan is. In the presented paper the X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy - XAS (EXAFS and XANES) was used to study Fe-chitosan complexes due to it is selectivity on the kind of studied atom. (author)
Abstract (Polish)
Zainteresowanie badaniem wlasciwosci chitosanow motywowane jest ich zdolnoscia do wiazania metali ciezkich i toksycznych. Daje to szerokie mozliwosci zastosowan w takich dziedzinach jak: biomedycyna, ekologia czy przemysl spozywczy. Chitosany sa produktem reakcji deacetylacji chityny, ktora pozyskiwana jest glownie z pancerzy skorupiakow morskich. Obydwa materialy sa waznymi naturalnymi polimerami. Biopolimery zawierajace Fe sa obecnie intensywnie badane, jako perspektywiczne nosniki lekow, z kontrolowanym uwalnianiem substancji aktywnych. Pomimo intensywnych badan nad procesem wiazania metali w chitosanch, wciaz nie ma jasnosci, co do koordynacji metali w tych zwiazkach. W prezentowanej pracy podjeto probe wyznaczenia koordynacji metalu w chitosanach z krzyzowo polaczonymi atomami zelaza. Wykorzystano w tym celu technike absorpcji rentgenowskiej (ang. X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy; XANES oraz EXAFS) ze wzgledu na jej selektywnosc na rodzaj atomu. (author)Additional details
