Determination of the spin dependent part of the scattering amplitude of 165Ho using neutron diffraction

By using unpolarized neutron diffraction on a holmium powder, we were able to track the intensity of the first magnetic satellite as a function of temperature between 4.2 and 1.4 °K: 1) To highlight the nuclear polarization induced by the ordered magnetic structure and the hyperfine field; 2) To measure both the magnitude and sign of the spin-dependent scattering amplitude term. We find: a+ — a- = — 0.34 ± 0.04 x 10^-12 cm.
Abstract (French)
Par diffraction de neutrons non polarisés sur une poudre d'holmium, on a pu, en suivant l'intensité du premier satellite magnétique en fonction de la température entre 4,2 et 1,4 °K : 1) Mettre en évidence la polarisation nucléaire induite par la structure magnétique ordonnée et le champ hyperfin ; 2) Mesurer en grandeur et en signe la valeur du terme de l'amplitude de diffusion dépendant du spin.
