Prediction of suspended solids transport in dredging

Description

The study deals with the factors affecting silting and sedimentation of suspended solids during river dredging using data collected for the River Kalajoki in 1983 - 1984. The results showed that suspended solids below the dredging point depend on the dredging capacity, on the river discharge, on the mean depth of the river and on the flow velocity. 3-5 % of the dredged material was suspended in the water. The method developed for predicting the amount of sedimentation is based on the theory of settling. The model in the laboratory with features of River Kalajoki was very simplified. Ways of reducing suspended solids with a silt curtain and a horizontal-flow roughing filter was also studied
