Redissolution of cesium radionuclides from sediments of freshwater lakes by biogenic ammonium ions

Description
The slow decrease of specific 137Cs activity in fish of prealpine lake Vorsee in south-west Germany is attributed to redissolution of 137Cs from the Chernobyl fallout out of the sediment of the lake. In two successive years (1991 and 1992) in autumn, respectively, with decreasing temperature an increase of the concentration of both dissolved 137Cs and ammoinium ions was measured in the water. It could be demonstrated by laboratory experiments, that redissolution can be enhanced by a stimulation of microbial metabolic activity in the sediment. Therefore it is suggested, that 137Cs radionuclides are redissolved via ion exchange with biogenic ammonium ions. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Der im Vorsee im suedwestdeutschen Alpenvorland beobachtete langsame Rueckgang der spezifischen 137Cs-Aktivitaet der Fische wird auf die Rueckloesung von 137Cs aus dem Tschernobyl-Fallout aus dem Sediment zurueckgefuehrt. In zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Jahren (1991 und 1992) wurde jeweils im Herbst mit absinkender Temperatur ein Anstieg der Konzentration von geloesten 137Caesium-Radionucliden und von Ammonium-Ionen im Wasser beobachtet. In Laborexperimenten wurde gezeigt, dass die Rueckloesung durch Stimulierung der mikrobiellen Stoffwechselaktivitaet im Sediment verstaerkt werden kann. Es wird daher vermutet, dass die Rueckloesung der Caesium-Radionuklide durch Ionenaustausch mit biogenen Ammonium-Ionen erfolgt. (orig.)Additional details
