Shielding calculations below 100 kVp

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Div. of Radiological Protection

Description

Shielding calculations were performed for various materials used in the low energy diagnostic X-ray region. Attenuation curves for monoenergetic photons up to 100keV and for X-rays of 40-100kVp were calculated in water, lead, masonite, gypsum and Pyrex glass. From these results, the tenth value layer(TVL) thickness in g/cm2 was calculated for the various materials at 60kVp; these TVL values differed widely proving the contention that treating all materials as concrete equivalent and applying a density correction is not valid at low energies.
