Workflow of three-dimensional building models to virtual reality

Description

In this paper we are going to present the study associated with the workflow of threedimensional models - that the architecture and construction industry commonly used - and its relationship with virtual reality technology. These technological tools associated with visualization, is to focus on the immersive environment due to its better evaluation in terms of presence, enjoyment and credibility, however, there are different methods to relate these models to virtual reality, based on plugins and slower forms of realization. The incorporation of technology in the Architecture and Construction Industry has been strengthened due to the incorporation of the BIM (Building Information Modelling), which has had a strong impact in different phases of the life cycle and that is strongly related to immersive technologies because the three-dimensional modeling of the building forms the basis that will later be the scenario of Virtual Reality to interact, one of the phases of life cycle more incidents around this relationship with virtual reality is the design, so this study will address that with respect to the platform called Oculus Rift Touch one of the most popular and inexpensive platforms in the market. While the global trend around project modeling is oriented towards this BIM methodology, the reality is that the current Industry uses a series of programs according to the required specialization. In this way there are companies that make models in programs such as AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, MicroStation, Revit, Vectorworks and others with different compatibility to virtual reality. At the same time, there are various plugins that allow relating these programs with virtual reality experiences, with different results in terms of immersion and interaction, where an important aspect is related to the optimization of geometry and materials so they can be converted properly under a computer with limits in memory and processing power
