Total, Shell, BP: can an Oil and Gas company be carbon neutral?
Description
It's official: Total, the French national oil and gas flagship, will one day be 'carbon neutral'. A few weeks ago, Shell, the third largest company in the world in terms of turnover in 2018, and supplier of no less than 8 pc of the world's oil and gas, announced that it was aiming for such a goal by 2050. This announcement itself followed that of another major, BP, which proudly announced last February its net zero carbon target by 2050, in a context of growing pressure from its investors and Civil society. Eni and Repsol are among other oil companies that have recently added a 'net zero emissions' color to their long-term ambition. From this 'shallot race', to paraphrase an IFRI analyst speaking recently on the subject, what should we retain? What to think of these commitments, and above all, what do they mean?

C'est officiel: Total, notre fleuron national du petrole et du gaz, sera donc un jour 'neutre en carbone'. Il y a quelques semaines deja, Shell, troisieme plus grosse societe du monde en termes de chiffre d'affaires en 2018, et pourvoyeuse de pas moins de 8% du petrole et gaz mondial avait annonce viser un tel objectif a l'horizon 2050. Cette annonce faisait elle-meme suite a celle d'une autre major, BP, qui annoncait en grande pompe en fevrier dernier son net zero carbon target a l'horizon 2050, dans un contexte de pression croissante de la part de ses investisseurs et de la societe civile. Eni et Repsol comptent parmi les autres compagnies petrolieres ayant recemment enrichi leur ambition long terme d'une couleur 'zero emissions nettes'. De cette 'course a l'echalote', pour paraphraser un analyste de l'Ifri s'exprimant recemment sur le sujet, que faut-il retenir? Que penser de ces engagements, et surtout, que signifient-ils?
