Safety at waste disposal. Annual report 1996. Plans for 1997

The AFA-1.1 work has so far been performed completely according to the project plan. Representatives from the Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden are participating in each of the following subprojects: AFA-1.1: Characterisation of long-lived low and inter medicate level radioactive waste; AFA-1.2: Performance analyses for the near-field of repositories for long-lived waste; AFA-1.3: Environmental impact statement for repositories for long-lived waste. An interim AFA-1.1 report was delivered in 1995. The results from the report are used as background for the work during 1996-1997. Missing methods and methods that possibly need to be improved have been identified. For these cases available equipment on the market and relevant information in the literature are studied. The results from the sub-project AFA-1.2 are presented in a report. The material can be used in future safety analyses for waste repositories. The results from the study will also contribute to a better understanding of how the matter is treated in different Nordic countries. The object of the subproject AFA-1.3 is to collect information about experience regarding Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in the Nordic countries and possibly also develop uniform treatment of this matter. An EIS theme meeting has been held in Finland. (EG)
