Description

For the shielding design of high power spallation target stations and hadron accelerators with energies up to 3 GeV it seems to be reasonable to use deterministic methods for the calculations instead of Monte Carlo methods because of the fact that deep penetration problems need very high particle numbers for good statistics and high numbers mean very high computation time. The deep penetrating particles are the neutrons. For these particles cross section data were available only up to 800 MeV. So it was necessary to upgrade the data base up to 2.8 GeV. This was done via calculations with code HETC using the thin target option. These data sets are the basic cross sections necessary for the one-dimensional transport calculations with code ANISN. The neutron source for the ANISN calculations is submitted from HETC runs performed for the target region. The ANISN calculated fluxes can be used to determine the dose inside and outside the shield and to generate parameter sets for semi-empirical codes like CASL (Computer Aided Shield Layout), which was recently developed. The described data and calculation procedures were developed and used for shielding considerations at the cooler synchrotron facility COSY in Julich and they will be used for calculations to design the shielding of the high current facility ESS (European Spallation Source), which is just under discussion and which is foreseen to operate with final proton energy somewhere in the range between 800 MeV and 3 GeV.
