Description

Meson exchange-current effects in the electroexcitation of magnetic states are evaluated in 16O and 208Pb. A new method is suggested which properly includes the influence of the nuclear mean field on meson exchange-current effects. In addition, an effective meson exchange-current operator is developed which considerably simplifies the evaluation of meson exchange-current effects. Over a wide range of momentum transfers, the magnetic cross sections for the electroexcitation of high-spin, stretched 1 plh states are found to be smoothly enhanced by meson exchange currents.
