Creep and Corrosion Behaviour of Ferritic Steels in a Simulated Steam-Cycle HTR Environment
Description
Creep, weight change, and hardness data were obtained on casts of ferritic steels exposed in simulated steam-cycle HTR helium to evaluate creep behaviour, environmental compatibility and thermal stability. These data, together with the results of metallographic examination, lead to the conclusion that there is minimal worry relative to the effects of the helium environment on the properties and behaviour of Cr/Mo steels containing 2-1/4 to 12% chromium. Carbon steels, however undergo decarburisation which could result in a significant loss of strength. (author)
