Main aspects of chemistry in light water reactors

Description
In order to avoid technical failures and build-up of high levels of radioactivity (corresponds to dosage levels) in nuclear power stations it is necessary to establish compatibility between design measures, appropriate materials and chemical operating regimes. The element cobalt, from which, during capture, the radionuclide Co-60 with a long half-life of 5.2 years and a penetrating gamma radiation of 1.17 and 1.33 MeV arises, plays an important part in the build-up of radioactivity level. The main aspects, requirements and problems which are identified from world-wide experience from boiling and pressurized water reactors are considered in this paper. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
In Kernkraftwerken ist zur Vermeidung technischer Schaeden und des Aufbaus hoher Aktivitaetspegel (corresponds to Dosisleistungsniveaus) eine besonders gute Abstimmung zwischen konstruktiven Massnahmen, geeigneten Werkstoffen und chemischer Betriebsweise erforderlich. Eine wesentliche Rolle beim Aufbau von Aktivitaetspegeln spielt das Element Kobalt, aus dem beim Neutroneneinfang das Radionuklid Co-60 mit einer langen Halbwertzeit von 5,2 Jahren und einer durchdringenden γ-Strahlung von 1,17 und 1,33 MeV entsteht. Die aus den weltweiten Erfahrungen zu erkennenden Schwerpunkte, Forderungen bzw. Probleme bei Siede- und Druckwasserreaktoren werden beschrieben. (orig.)Additional details
