Comparison of experimental and theoretical lateral multiple scattering of 15-60 keV ions (Z=6-51) on Xe

Description

The accuracy of the analytical calculation of the lateral multiple scattering distribution has been tested against a Monte Carlo calculation using exact f(tsup(1/2)) functions instead of those from the small angle approximation. The analytical calculation agrees to within 1% with the Monte Carlo results. Theoretical lateral multiple scattering of 15-60 keV ions (Z=6-51) on Xe has been compared with the measurements of Knudsen et al. Calculations were performed using interaction potentials calculated from the Dirac-Fock electron distributions in the Gordon-Kim approximation. The experimental oscillatory behaviour of the widths of the lateral distributions as a function of Z1 is not reproduced but the mean trend is achieved. (orig.)
