Description
We show that the linear theory of wave propagation breaks down for fast electromagnetic wave propagation near the cutoff frequency in a highly magnetized plasma. In this case, even for small wave amplitudes, particle motion is relativistic. The cutoff frequency is then considerably reduced, being independent of the field strength and inversely proportional to the wave amplitude. (orig.)
