Application of LiF-TL-phosphors for the measurement of low energy (keV) beta radiation

Various methods are applied for detection and measurement of low-energy beta radiation with no one of simplicity and low cost in case many measurements have to be performed, for example in environments with the presence of tritium (JET etc). Here thermoluminescence dosimetry offers new aspects with repeatedly, easy-to-use small dosemeters. This is discussed in this paper together with results of experimental work performed in the Dosimetry Laboratory of the Radiation Protection Devision of the Joint Research Centre Ispra within the last two years. It is shown that LiF-TL-material is well suited for tritium detection and dose assessment even in the presence of high energy electrons or gamma-radiation. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Verschiedene Methoden finden zum Nachweis und zur Messung von niederenergetischer Betastrahlung Verwendung, wobei keine einfach ist und ebensowenig billig, wenn es sich um eine grosse Anzahl von Messungen handelt, wie z. B. in tritiumhaltigen gasfoermigen Medien (Jet etc.). Hier bietet die Thermolumineszenzdosimetrie mit mehrfach einsetzbaren und leicht zu manipulierenden Kleindosimetern neue Moeglichkeiten. Darueber und ueber experimentelle Arbeiten waehrend der vergangenen zwei Jahre im Dosimetrielabor der Abteilung Strahlenschutz der Gemeinsamen Forschungsstelle der Europaeischen Gemeinschaften in Ispra berichtet diese Arbeit. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass das TL-Material LiF sich recht gut zum Tritium-Nachweis eignet und Dosismessungen selbst in Gegenwart hochenergetischer Beta- und Gammastrahlung moeglich sind.
