Development of a position sensitive multi-wire cathode strip detector for fission fragments

  • 1. Nuclear Physics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

We have developed a large area 2-dimensional position sensitive multi-wire cathode strip detector (MCSD) for the detection of fission fragments (FFs). The performance characteristics of the detector has been studied with FFs from 252Cf source. The position information is obtained from the measurement of time delay signals of the cathode strips (X-direction) and split-cathode wires (Y-direction) with respect to the timing signal from the anode wires. The position resolution is found to be about 1.0 and 1.5 mm in X and Y-directions respectively. The detector has been used for measuring FFs produced in heavy-ion induced experiments in 6,7Li+232Th reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. (author)
