The diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging in intractable temporal lobe epilepsy

Description
We analyzed the preoperative MRI in 59 surgically treated patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. 57% cases of pathologically proven mesial sclerosis and 81% of foreign tissue lesions were properly detected. 1 tumor and 1 focal gliosis were misdiagnosed. There were also 2 false positive diagnosis based on the picture of increased T2-weighted signal. The MRI is obligatory in patients with refractory epilepsy. The coronal inversion recovery sequence is recommended for the purpose of hippocampal volumetry. (author)
