Coherence effects in transfer reactions at low energy

Description

The absorption and the energy loss probability distributions due to transfer processes were extracted from a semiclassical coupled-channels approach for the reaction 60Ni + 60Ni at Elab = 360 MeV and compared to the results one obtains assuming all the transitions as independent. The comparison proves to be very good for peripheral reactions. However, as far as the distance of closest approach reaches the sum of the radii, strong non-linear effects cause the two predictions to diverge, stressing the importance of a coupled-channel calculation and the coherence among different channels. The shape and the large size of the calculated energy spectra suggest the use of a multi-trajectory approach for a more realistic treatment. (author)
