A study of aerosol deposition by thermophoresis in cylindrical ducts

Description

The scope of the study was aerosol deposition in cylindrical ducts, and the deposition due to thermophoresis particularly. The theoretical knowledge on this force and the basis of fluid mechanics are first recalled. An experimental study of thermophoretic deposition of particles in laminar flow was carried out in the particular case of uniform particle concentration and gas temperature at the inlet of the cooled tube. When the gas temperature was equilibrated with the wall temperature and thermophoretic particle deposition along the walls had ceased, the deposition efficiency approached a limit. Our experimental results showed that this limiting efficiency was independent on flow. Finally, for the laminar flow regime, a set of simple equations was developed in order to forecast the thermophoretic deposition of particles of any size along a cylindrical tube

Abstract (French)

Dans le cadre d'une etude sur le depot des aerosols dans les conduits cylindriques, nous analysons celui du a la thermophorese. Dans un premier temps, nous rassemblons les connaissances theoriques sur ce phenomene et rappelons quelques notions de mecanique des fluides. Puis, nous etudions experimentalement le depot des particules sous l'action d'un gradient thermique, en regime d'ecoulement laminaire dans le cas particulier d'une distribution uniforme de la concentration particulaire et de la temperature du gaz a l'entree d'un conduit dont les parois sont refroidies. Nos resultats experimentaux montrent que l'efficacite limite de depot est independante du debit. Cette efficacite limite correspond a l'efficacite de depot d'un tube infiniment long ou la temperature du gaz aurait atteint celle des parois. Finalement, nous proposons, pour un regime d'ecoulement laminaire, un ensemble d'equations simples qui devrait permettre la prevision du depot par thermophorese, le long d'un tube cylindrique, pour une large gamme de dimensions d'aerosols
