Effect of Fe2O3 on the sintering and stabilization of ZrO2-MgO system

Description

Through X-ray diffraction, it was studied the influence of the iron oxide (Fe2O3) as a mineralizer in the development of partially stabilized zirconia phases (cubic/tetragonal) within the system ZrO2-MgO. In the preparation of the studied compositions it was utilized a Brazilian comercial zirconia powder and different precursors for the MgO and Fe2O3 additives. It was observed that the main effect of iron oxide consisted on the speed up of the solid solution formation process of Mg+2 in the Zr+4 sub-lattice, as well as being a very effective sintering agent. Abstract (Portuguese)

Neste trabalho estudou-se atraves de difracao de raios-X o efeito do oxido de ferro (Fe2O3) como aditivo mineralizador auxiliar no processo de formacao das fases (tetragonal e/ou cubica) do sistema ZrO2-MgO. No preparo das composicoes foi utilizada uma zirconia de pureza comercial e diferentes precursores para o MgO e o Fe2O3. Foi observado que o efeito principal do oxido de ferro consiste na aceleracao do processo de formacao de solucao solida do MgO na matriz de zirconia, atuando ainda como aditivo de sinterizacao.
