A wide-range dosimeter relatively insensitive to radiation quality: alanine

Description

A dosimeter based on the electron paramagnetic resonance measurement of radiation-produced free radicals in alanine has the advantages of small bulk, non destructive reading, good reproducibility, tissue equivalence for both photons and neutrons and a wide linearity range between 102 and 106 rads. This linearity results in a low sensitivity to the microscopic dose distribution. From the first measurements on different fast neutron beams the parameter a of Katz's mathematical model may be calculated and the latter used to predict the dosimeter response to any particle of known mass, charge and speed. Present and future applications of this dosimeter range from the link-up of γ dosimetries for source of quite different dose rates to the dosimetry of mixed γ+n fields (in-pile dosimetry for example)

Abstract (French)

La mesure par resonance paramagnetique electronique des radicaux libres formes par les rayonnements dans l'alanine fournit le principe d'un dosimetre caracterise par un faible encombrement, une lecture non destructive, une bonne reproductibilite, l'equivalence aux tissus tant pour les photons que pour les neutrons et une large gamme de linearite entre 102 et 106 rads. Cette linearite entraine une faible sensibilite a la repartition microscopique de la dose. Les premieres mesures effectuees sur differents faisceaux de neutrons rapides permettent de calculer le parametre a du modele mathematique de Katz et de prevoir a l'aide de celui-ci la reponse du dosimetre a toute particule dont on connait la masse, la charge et la vitesse. Les applications actuelles et futures de ce dosimetre vont du raccordement des dosimetres γ pour des sources de debits tres differents a la dosimetrie des champs mixtes γ+n (dosimetrie en pile, par exemple)
