Description

An improved ultrasonic method combining the longitudinal and transverse wave acoustic elasticity is discussed. A new parameter M which is the ratio of the trip time for the T-wave to that for the L-wave in a bolt is introduced. The value depends on the stress applied to the bolt and the material property of the bolt. The unstressed bolt parameter M0 is calibrated, which remains constant for any bolt of the same material under the same heat treatment condition. The Method is used successfully for measuring assembled bolt's stresses of nuclear valve flanges
