Measuring the electron electric dipole moment in YbF

  • 1. Sussex Centre for Optical and Atomic Physics, University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton BN1 9QH (United Kingdom)

Description

We describe the current status of the experiment at Sussex to measure the electron's permanent electric dipole moment de using the paramagnetic molecule YbF. We consider a number of systematic effects which could mimic de and conclude that they are far below the current experimental sensitivity. As of June 2001 we have accumulated over 20 hours of data, which combined give a measurement de=0.6±4x10-26 e.cm
