Design and economic considerations for a caesium-137 sludge irradiator

  • 1. CH2M Hill, Albuquerque, NM (USA)

Description

A sludge irradiator design must consider the source, conveyor, source storage area, shielding, control system, and ventilation system. Each of these elements must be properly integrated to develop a functional irradiator. Operational requirements of the irradiator are within the capabilities normally available at a wastewater treatment facility. Application of the sludge irradiation technology must be done in concert with other sludge treatment processes to develop an acceptable sludge management system. Likewise, evaluation of irradiation and its costs must be done in the context of the complete system. (author)
