Radiation protection in veterinary practice

It is suggested that those using radiographic equipment in veterinary practice should have a greater awareness of the hazards of radiation, the potential sources of exposure and the basic methods of radiation protection, but it is also emphasised that if the rules are observed and the potential danger appreciated, then the risks are quite acceptable. The effects of x-rays on living tissues, and the special implication of these to the veterinarian, safety aspects of x-ray machines, protective clothing and ancillary equipment requirements, suitability of premises, radiographic procedures and their supervision, monitoring of potential radiation hazards and staff training, are discussed.
