Medical therapy with π- mesons
Description
Physical and biological aspects led to the realization of cancer therapy with π- mesons. The pions are produced by collision of the protons with target material. They are focused into the treatment volume. Two methods are developed to scan this volume in a 3-dimensional way. The dosimetric system has to take into account that the dose contains spatially mixed LET contributions. CT-slices of the patient serve as a basis for therapy planning. As experience grew, deeper lying tumors were treated. The expectations of the project have recently been accomplished. Even so, it is too early to make conclusive statements about clinical data; however, the results permit us to look optimistically into the future. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Physikalische und biologische Aspekte bewogen uns, Krebstherapie mit π--Mesonen durchzufuehren. Die Erzeugung von Pionen beruht auf dem Zusammenstoss von Protonen mit Targetmaterial. Sie werden fokussiert und treten radial in das Bestrahlungsvolumen ein. Zwei Methoden wurden zum 3-dimensionalen Ueberstreichen des Bestrahlungsvolumens entwickelt. Das Dosimetriesystem muss der Anforderung Rechnung tragen, dass die Dosis raeumlich gemischte LET-Beitraege enthaelt. CT-Bilder vom Patienten dienen als Grundlagen fuer die Therapieplanung. Immer tiefer liegende Tumoren sind behandelt worden. Bis zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt sind die Projekterwartungen erfuellt. Noch ist es zu frueh, zur klinischen Beurteilung abschliessende Aussagen zu machen; doch lassen die bisherigen Resultate uns optimistisch in die Zukunft blicken. (orig.)Additional details
