Asymmetry of the disturbed geomagnetic field at middle and low latitudes

Description

Investigations into peculiarities of longitudinal asymmetry of field variations at middle and low latitudes is conducted using data of geomagnetic field variations during intensive magnetic storm on 23-24 March 1969. It is shown that for the given storm the asymmetry of long-period (>1h) component of field is higher in lower, than in middle latitudes. Field asymmetry for short-period variations grows with latitude increase. Long-period component of asymmetry correlates with western electrojet activity better, than with eastern one. This correlation is heigher in lower, than in middle latitudes. The observed peculiarities of magnetic field asymmetry result both from uniform distribution of ring current ions by latitude and from contribution of longitudinal current fields
