Spin-up in SMC X-1

  • 1. Mullard Space Science Lab., Dorking (UK)

Description

The pulsation period of SMC X-1 was measured in 1976 August. The period, 0.7147337 +- 0.0000012 s, was significantly less than that which was measured by SAS-3 in 1976 February. Other orbital parameters were consistent with, but more accurately determined than, those measured by SAS-3. A new value for the orbital period has also been derived, and it is found that it is significantly less than historical values for the period of the optical companion. (author)
