The fusion applications and marketing evaluation study (FAME)
Description
Fusion reactors show the promise of being multiproduct: the thermal energy could be used for electricity, synthetic fuels, and process hend the neutrons could be used to breed fissile fuel, 60Co, excess tritium, and other radionuclides. Because fusion reactor neutron production could be 10 times that of fission, breeding rates would be high and it is likely that costs of bred material may be quite competitive. Other applications include exploiting the microwave energy from the plasma and deep space power and thrusting. In this paper, estimates are made of the economics of coproduction from fusion reactors
