Energy storage in the electric warship

Description

Since the adoption of Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) as the cornerstone of the Royal Navy's Electric Warship concept, a requirement for energy storage has been identified. Investigations into suitable technologies have been undertaken at University College, London (UCL) by students of the Marine Engineering MSc course. In particular, flywheels have been considered to meet the various energy storage demands and to complement fuel cell installations for the next generation of warships. This paper summarises this work and its implications for future warship design. Any views expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of Her Majesty's Government.
