A mass spectrometer-beam experiment for investigations of planetary atmospheres
Description
An experimental concept for investigation of planetary atmospheres using a mass spectrometer is discussed. High atmospheric pressures are reduced to mass spectrometer operating pressures by means of differential pumping. Sampling is accomplished through the formation of a molecular beam. A flag in front of the mass spectrometer can be used to separate ambient gases from system background. Laboratory tests have confirmed the feasibility of the experiment, particularly in CO2 dominated atmospheres. (Auth.)
