Description
The effect was studied of the kind and the extent of deformation of hot-rolled strips from carbon steels upon descaling in hydrochloric acid. Mechanical descalers which deform hot-rolled carbon strips (by stretching, reduction, etc.) by approximately 1 %, considerably accelerate the removal of scale in hydrochloric acid and accordingly increase the capacity of continuous pickling units. Most effective in this respect is the treatment involving stretching and bending. Kinetic curves that have been plotted for strip 2.2 to 4.0 mm thick (20 kp, 20 sp, 08 kp steels) render possible an objective evaluation of the pickling at various stages and of the necessary pickling time (in a fresh solution of 20-% HCl at 70 deg C)
