Correlation between scintigraphic renal volume and unilateral 131I-hippurane clearance

The left-to-right ratio of renal function was determined in 143 patients on the basis of both the ING and the renal volume determined by scintiscanning. There was a linear relationship between the two quantities. Except for cases of obstruction of the urine flow, the two quantities were well correlated. The left-to-right ratio yields direct information on the unilateral renal function. The method is particularly recommended for dystopic kidneys. On the other hand, if the correlation between the absolute values of 131I-hippurane clearance and the renal volumes is not more than fair, systematic errors must be assumed in the applied clearance method with γ camera and with falling plasma levels of 131I-hippurane without dietetic preparation of the patient. This means that the clearance method with γ camera and with falling plasma levels without dietetic preparation can give only a general picture of the renal function. (orig.)
