Microstructural study of multifilamentary Nb-46.5 wt.$% Ti superconducting wires
Description
Microstructural characteristics are compared with the critical current densities for conventional Nb-Ti wires designated for the TORE SUPRA Tokamak toroidal coils. First results are also reported for the microstructure evolution of a new generation of Alsthom ac Nb-46.5 wt.% Ti superconducting wires during their fabrication for purposes of monitoring their drawability. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used for the structural analysis. Critical current densities for the TORE SUPRA wires were deemed to result from the flux pinning effect of the α precipitates. Other structural and strain-induced transformations are discussed
