Description

Application of radiation protection substances centers around two major applications: radiotherapy with the aim to diminish the effect of radiation in healthy tissue; and protection of persons in the case of radiation accident or radiation desaster. Quantifiable biological responses are required for a comparison of the efficacy of various substances. To this end, the factors of dose reduction or dose modification are employed. Physicochemical, pharmacodynamic and biochemical action mechanisms are discussed in order to explain the efficacy of radiation protection substances. (MG)

Abstract (German)

Bei der Anwendung von Strahlenschutzsubstanzen stehen vor allem zwei moegliche Anwendungsgebiete im Vordergrund, naemlich zum einen die Strahlentherapie, wo eine Verminderung der Strahlenwirkung im gesunden Gewebe angestrebt wird, und zum anderen der Personenschutz in Strahlenunfall- oder -katastrophensituationen. Fuer einen Vergleich der Wirksamkeit verschiedener Substanzen sind quantifizierbare biologische Reaktionen erforderlich. Man benutzt hier den Dosisreduktions- oder -modifikationsfaktor. Als Erklaerung fuer die Wirksamkeit der Strahlenschutzsubstanzen werden physikalisch-chemische, pharmakodynamische und biochemische Wirkungsmechanismen diskutiert. (MG)
