Repair of gamma-radiation induced DNA strand breaks in archaebacteria

Description
The archaebacterium Haloferax mediterranei exhibits high radiation resistance. The number of radiation induced strand breaks in the cellular DNA of H. mediterranei increases with increasing doses of gamma radiation. Post-irradiation incubation of the cells in growth medium results in repair of most of the radiation induced DNA strand breaks. The radiation resistance of H mediterranei could be due to the existence of an efficient DNA repair system. (author). 9 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab
