Absolute measurement of the 239Pu fission cross section and the total cross section of 6Li and heavy water for thermal neutrons
Description
The cross sections for thermal neutrons (energy region 0.01 - 0.1 eV) are measured with a mechanical time-of-flight spectrometer on the tangential neutron channel T-7 of the Belgian BR-2 reactor. The adaptation of the measured fission cross section to an interference curve for the fission cross section at 0.0253 eV for 238 Pu is: sigma o/f = 740.7 +- 3.4 b(+- 0.46%). The fission cross section of 239Pu is calculated up to the neutron energy of 20 eV using an interference formula. Comparing with experimental values one gets the spin J = 0 for the 15.5 eV resonance. The present results obtained with the natural Li sample for the 0.0253 eV absorption cross section of the 6Li(n,α)3H reaction is: sigma o/n,α = 939 +- 20 b(+- 2.1%). The total cross section is also calculated from a measurement of the neutron transmission of heavy water sample. (orig./LH)

Die Wirkungsquerschnitte fuer thermische Neutronen (Energiebereich 0,01 - 0,1 eV) werden mit einem mechanischen Flugzeitspektrometer an dem tangentialen Neutronenkanal T-7 des belgischen BR2-Reaktors gemessen. Die Anpassung des gemessenen Spaltquerschnitts mit einer Interferenzkurve ergibt fuer den Spaltquerschnitt bei 0,0253 eV fuer 239 Pu: sigma o/f = 740,7 +- 3,4 b( +- 0,46%). Mit einer Interferenzformel wird der Spaltquerschnitt von 239Pu bis zu der Neutronenenergie von 20 eV berechnet. Aus einem Vergleich mit experimentellen Werten folgt fuer die 15,5 eV-Resonanz der Spin J = 0. Das vorlaeufige mit der natuerlichen Li-Probe erhaltene Ergebnis fuer den 0,0253 eV-Absorptionsquerschnitt der 6Li (n,α)3H-Reaktion betraegt sigma o/n,α = 939 +- 20 b(+- 2,1%). Ebenfalls wird aus einer Messung der Neutronen-Transmission einer Schwerwasser-Probe der totale Wirkungsquerschnitt berechnet. (orig./WL)Additional details
