Proceedings from the international symposium on alternative low-level waste technologies

This symposium provided information to policy-makers, researchers, contractors and the citizens of Illinois on advanced technologies for the treatment, storage, and disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLW). The objectives of the symposium were: to assist the Central Midwest Region and other regions in learning about alternative LLW technologies; to examine LLW treatment, storage, and disposal and alternatives in use or under development in other countries; to examine new technologies being considered for commercial development in this country; to consider in detail the potential use of alternative technologies in Illinois taking into consideration Illinois' specific geohydrology, climate, and other conditions; and to evaluate advanced technologies from a regulatory perspective. Internationally recognized experts and suppliers of advanced treatment, storage and disposal technologies made presentations at the conference. These reports were then evaluated by experts in health physics, engineering, geology and other related disciplines, with particular attention to whether the technologies would be useful in Illinois. These proceedings are divided into sections according to the order in which the topics appeared on the agenda. Following each set of papers is the evaluation by the respondent, and questions from the conference attendees along with speakers' answers. Each paper has been abstracted separately
