Heat networks in Denmark - Travel diary, January 2024
Description
District heating is particularly well established in Denmark, thanks to an energy planning policy that favors the development of this technology. They enable the widespread use of thermal renewable and recovery energies and limit dependence on fossil fuels, while also providing flexibility to the electricity grid thanks to the development of large-scale storage infrastructures. In fact, the power grid is closely linked to heating networks, with cogeneration playing a key role. The local governance model of district heating networks, based on a non-profit approach, gives the sector a positive image. Today, they are seen as a means of developing renewable heat more rapidly and at a lower cost than individual solutions. This publication is based on two study trips to Denmark in which Cerema's district heating and cooling networks division took part: One organized by the Danish Embassy in Paris and the Danish Board of District Heating (DBDH) on September 26 and 27, 2022; The other organized by NewHeat on September 27 and 28, 2023. The aim here is to present the Danish context in which the development of district heating networks has taken place. In addition, examples of heating networks are provided, based on the various sites visited during the study tours. Two focuses are given, one on solar installations supplying heating networks and the other on large-scale thermal storage, which is one of the distinguishing features of Danish heating networks
Abstract (French)
Le chauffage urbain est particulierement bien implante au Danemark grace a une politique de planification energetique favorable au developpement de cette technologie. Permettant de massifier le recours aux energies renouvelables et de recuperation thermiques et de limiter la dependance aux energies fossiles, ils sont egalement un outil offrant de la flexibilite au reseau electrique grace au developpement d'infrastructures de stockage a grande echelle. En effet, le reseau electrique est fortement couple aux reseaux de chaleur en lien avec la place importante accordee a la cogeneration. Le modele de gouvernance locale des reseaux de chaleur, base sur une logique de non-profit, offre une image positive a la filiere. Ils sont aujourd'hui vus comme un moyen de developper la chaleur renouvelable plus rapidement et a un cout plus faible que les solutions individuelles. Cette publication s'appuie sur deux voyages d'etudes realises au Danemark auxquels le Pole reseaux de chaleur et de froid du Cerema a participe: L'un organise par l'Ambassade du Danemark a Paris et par Danish Board of District Heating (DBDH) les 26 et 27 septembre 2022; L'autre organise par l'entreprise NewHeat les 27 et 28 septembre 2023. Il s'agit ici de presenter le contexte danois dans lequel le developpement des reseaux de chaleur a pu s'operer. En complement, des exemples de reseaux de chaleur viennent illustrer le propos en s'appuyant sur les differents sites visites pendant les voyages d'etudes. Deux focus sont realises, l'un sur les installations solaires alimentant les reseaux de chaleur et l'autre sur le stockage thermique a grande echelle qui font, entre autres, la specificite des reseaux de chaleur danois
