Carbon-14 production in Ontario Hydro's power reactors

Description

Ontario Hydro produces carbon-14 as a by-product in its power reactors. Over 7000 curies a year is produced in the heavy water moderators of these reactors from oxygen-17. This carbon-14 is removed by ion-exchange resins which are stored in concrete containers. It is estimated that over 50,000 curies is currently in recoverable storage in these containers. A process has been developed to extract the carbon-14 from these resins and to enrich it by cryogenic distillation. The resulting product has high chemical purity and high isotopic.
