A whole-body positron tomograph, Positologica II, design and performance evaluation

Description
A new whole-body positron computed tomograph is presented. The device has three detector rings, each consisting of 40 quad-BGO detector units. The quad-BGO detector contains four BGO crystals viewed by two photomultiplier tubes. This achieves efficient coupling between the crystals and photomultiplier tubes. Anticipated spatial resolution is about 10 mm FWHM. Sensitivities for true events, scattered coincidence events, and single events are evaluated. The sensitivity for true events is 33 and 39 kcps for in-layer and cross-layer images, respectively, for a uniform phantom 20 cm in diameter containing 1 μCi/ml. The fraction of scattered coincidence events in the reconstructed image is estimated at less than 10% for a uniform phantom of 20-40 cm diameter
