Description

The analysis of the experimental data evidences that in pseudobinary rare-earth compounds, the iron and cobalt moments scale linearly with the exchange fields acting on these atoms. The iron proportionality constant Vsub(Fe) = 1/(18 +- 2)x 10-6 μsub(β)/G is six times smaller than that determined in case of cobalt Vsub(Co) = 1/(3 +- 0.2) x 10-6 μsub(β)/G evidencing a more localized magnetic behaviour of iron atoms. Using the Vsub(Fe) and Vsub(Co) values, from the differences in the exchange fields in similar gadolinium and yttrium compounds are computed the induced iron or cobalt moments. The calculated values agree reasonably with the experimental data. Iron and cobalt behaviour in rare-earth compounds are briefly discussed. (author)
