Radical products of methanol radiolysis. Absorption spectra

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Ehlektrokhimii

Description

To separate individual bands, belonging to the identified radicals in the total UV spectrum, optical characteristics and EPR spectra have been compared obtained under the action of light with different wave lengths and UV-spectra have been studied arising in the process of pulse radiolysis of methanol and its water solutions. The radical CH2OH has attained special attention. In a complex spectrum of optical absorption of γ-irradiated glass-like methanol an absorption spectrum of CH2OH radicals has been isolated at 77 K by photobleaching of esub(tr)sup(-) and subsequent UV-photolysis. The band of these radicals is detected in the absorption spectra of short-lived particles in diluted water-methanol solutions saturated with N2O and in evacuated methanol. Extinction coefficient of the radicals CH2OH, the band half-width, and the rate constant of recombination at 300 K have been determined. It has been shown that with an increase of a dose rate in a pulse new bands appear in the absorption spectra of short-lived particles in evacuated methanol
