A new source of asymmetry between matter and anti-matter
Creators
Description
The experiment LHCb at CERN has observed a difference in the behaviour between particles and their antiparticles containing a charm quark. The experiment has shown that the meson D0 (quarks c and u-bar) and its anti-particle (quarks c-bar and u) show differences when they decay into kaons or pions. This breaking of symmetry between matter-antimatter is called: CP violation. CP violation has already been observed for strange quarks (s) and beauty quarks (b) but it is the first time for charm quarks (c). (A.C.)
