Suppression of proton decay in SU(5) grand unification
Description
By adding a scalar 45 representation to the minimal SU(5) model of grand unification so that the fermion mass spectrum is realistically realized, and letting the SU(3) octet piece of the 45 be light, the proton decay lifetime can be pushed up by orders of magnitude with only a slight drop in the value of sin2thetasub(W). We show numerical results from a twop-loop renormalization-group analysis using modified minimal subtraction, and discuss in some detail the structure of the Higgs sector which allows for such a scenario.
