H53α emission from M82

Description

The first detection of H53α emission from another galaxy has been made. At the frequency of this transition (43 GHz) spontaneous emission dominates and dust extinction can be completely ignored. The inferred photo-ionization rate is NLyC = 1.1 x 1054 s-1; a factor of 5 larger than estimates based on large-aperture Brα observations due to significant dust attenuation at 4 μm. Together with other data, this high value of the ionization rate has important implications for the allowed mass-range of stars present
