Dynamic variations of the auroral precipitation and the polar cap

  • 1. Johns Hopkins Univ., Laurel, MD (USA). Applied Physics Lab.

Description

The low altitude polar orbiting satellites of the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) have provided continuous observations of the polar region precipitations since 1977. The morphology of the auroral electron precipitation and its variations with the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and the substorm activity are presented. Their implications to the magnetospheric configuration and the solar-terrestrial interaction will also be discussed
